For those interested in working with children ages 3-6, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children based on the conviction that God and the child are in a relationship.  Inspired by Montessori methodology, this catechetical approach was further developed by Dr. Sofia Cavallenti, a scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobi, a Montessori scholar.

Course Objectives:

  • To explore the religious nature and the most vital religious needs of the 3 to 6 year old child.
  • To present the methodology and the guiding principles of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, as it especially pertains to the 3 to 6 year old child.
  • To meditate on the biblical and liturgical themes presented to the 3 to 6 year old child in the first year of the CGS program.
  • To offer guidelines and assistance in preparing the Level 1 atrium environment and in making the catechist's album and caechetical materials for the first year of the CGS program.

Sue first began implementing the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2003 while teaching at St. Peter's Catholic School in Beaufort, SC. She is certified in Levels I, II, and III and became a formation leader in 2010 after receiving her Master of Arts degree in the discipline of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO. Sue has directed religious education programs in dioceses of Milwaukee, Chicago, and NW Indiana where she has also facilitated the development of CGS in several parishes. Sue is a wife, mother, and grandmother, and she currently lives close to family in NW Indiana. Sue looks forward to sharing the gift of the CGS with those who have been called to this formation course – for truly, “it is in giving that we receive."
